To those who want to have a general idea of the cost of living in KL (and others) as compared to Manila, check out this study by UBS:
http://www.ubs.com/1/e/wealthmanagement/wealth_management_research/prices_earnings.htmlI got this after reading the Inquirer's editorial today.
Im not an economist but this is how i understand the study. My analysis may be simplistic but i hope you guys get the point

:
1) Cost of living - Manila may be the 2nd cheapest, after Mumbai (KL is a near no 5!), but it's also one of the lowest in terms of wage levels and domestic purchasing power! Cheap but poor nga!
2) Salary level - Manila is the 72nd (2nd lowest!) while KL is 56th. by here alone, you can tell that the workers in Manila are underpaid.
3) DOmestic Pur Power (DPP) - Manila is 71st (3rd lowest!) while KL is 46. From this you can already tell how painful it is for our kababayans to live and work in Manila - underpaid and the prices are overpriced!
In conclusion, you may end up saving more if you work in KL. Generally, food and accommodation are almost the same price as Manila, but you get a much higher salary and PP! so you still have enough to remit back home or to save. KL workers get paid 2.5 times higher and their PP is 2.2 times more than Manila workers!
of course the salary levels may need to be adjusted lower because Filipino workers generally get lower salaries than locals, unless of course the Filipino is a full-fledged expat!
You may use this study as a guide also if you're torn between what country to work in. You just have to remember that cost of living is nothing unless you factor in one's Salary and PP. conversely, Salary is also nothing without considering cost of living. Take for instance singapore, salaries are 1.8 higher than KL based on the net index, but cost of living in SG is 2.31 times higher than KL!.
i hope this helps!
